4 STEPS TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL SONGWRITER

To become a successful songwriter in the music industry is a big dream for many, but with hard work, you can secure a position as a major artist. Songwriting is a big field that comes with many challenges and requires you to sacrifice your sleep, family, friends, and vacations, but your passion for succeeding along with the right guidance will help you become a good songwriter. Given below are some tips on how you can become a successful songwriter.

Step 1: Gather Your Information

  • Find out what type of music you like and what kind of songwriter you want to become. Whether you want to write serious songs, party anthems, or love songs, as a songwriter, you will be given a wide range of work, so try to listen to and write a wide range of songs, especially all the new songs and the ones that are getting hits and find out which type of song you like writing because it will be your individuality. The second important step is “stay busy.”
  • Inspiration comes to those who explore. Go out with your friends, attend live concerts, watch the artist and the audience, get back home with reasons to write songs, or take some song writing lessons. Learning new things under the proper guidance is a must. Just keep yourself busy with music.

Step 2: Music Composition

  • The main thing in song composition is building a structure. A song needs a logical structure to get a hit. First, there should be an intro in which you can add instrument openings, tones, and rhythm of the song. Then comes the verse, which is the common part of the song with the main lyrics, and at the end, the chorus. You can give your song a nice ending or use repeated sections.
  • After writing your song, record it. You can hear it and learn from your mistakes. In the beginning, you might need several demos, as you will need to work on the small details you missed. Get some knowledge about music theory. It is not compulsory for songwriters to get an education in music theory, but it helps a lot. You will know which note will fit with the other one. So buy music theory books for self-study and take online music lessons.

Step 3: Write Your Own Lyrics.

  • Get yourself a notebook that can be fitted into your bag so that you can take it with you wherever you go. Make a habit of carrying it everywhere and writing the lines or thoughts simultaneously before they vanish. Get proper sleep to avoid getting frustrated while writing your songs.
  • Try to write songs from your heart, from your experience. You might face some difficulties, but try to give your best and put all your emotions on paper. Try to tell your audience a story with your song.

Step 4: Promote Yourself

  • Make a portfolio of demos. Going for an interview with one demo will not be enough, so compile a demo collection with your best songs. You can also share this demo portfolio with your friends. They can help you by showing your work to others.
  • Post your songs on social media, and if they get a good number of likes, you can contact the music industry to show your work.
